Thoughts are more than just things that inhabit your mind. They are powerful predictors of our future and what shows up in your life is a result of the magnetic power of thoughts.
I was reminded of this the other day when I was out for a mountain bike ride with my husband.
There were a few places on the trail that came very close to a steep drop-off on one side. As I approached that section, I noticed how close to the edge I was, and in an instant had a moment of panic where I thought “oh my god, I could go over the edge.” In that instant, my thoughts turned to what I instinctively knew, and that was to focus my attention on what I wanted and not what I didn’t want- which of course was to fall off the cliff.
As soon as I focused on where I wanted my bike to go, and not were I didn’t want it to go, low and behold, my desire was answered and I regained stability and found myself firmly planted on the trail again. When I had a little time to regain my composure, I started to think about the powerful lesson that is for our lives. Where I put my attention, is what shows up in my life. So… if I focus on what I do want and not what I don’t want, it’s amazing how what shows up is aligned with what I want.
There is a very powerful law that is demonstrated in the best selling book by Pam Grout, E- Squared: 9 Do-it-Yourself Energy Experiments that Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality. I loved the book as it was fun, entertaining and had you do some really cool experiments that prove how your thoughts create your reality. The book club I belong to picked this book this year, and we’re all going to try different experiments in the book and report back.
One of the premises in the book is, whatever you focus on expands, and that works for both the good and the bad. I think most of us would agree with this and when you start paying attention to what you’re thinking, you can begin to make sense and explain what is showing up in your life circumstances.
The first step in getting more of what you want in life and less of what you don’t want is becoming aware of what you’re thinking. You want to do this, preferably before you fall off a cliff. I was so thankful that I’ve been practicing this enough that my thoughts shifted rapidly right when I really needed it!
Although my bike riding experience was a tangible example, it was a powerful reminder for me. Always focus my attention on what I want and not what I don’t want!! Start to pay attention to the thoughts that run through your mind. Are you moving in a direction you want to go in your life? If not, you may be focusing on the things that you don’t want in your life.
Integrating a regular meditation practice into your life can help you be more successful in this area. You will become more intimate with your thoughts and experiences and with that increased awareness comes increased choice. You can make the choice to have more of what you want in your life, just by making a minor shift in your perspective.
What are you thinking? Do you focus on what you want in your life or what you don’t want?
