When I was growing up one of my favorite movies was “The Wizard of Oz”. There were so many things that I loved about that movie, and at the time I thought it was quite magical. There was a part in the movie, near the end, when Dorothy learned that all she needed to do to return home was tap her ruby red slippers together. When she got home, she learned that she always had the power within her, but just needed to discover it for herself.
I think meditation is like those ruby red slippers. Each of us needs to know that the answers are within us. Meditation is the tool we can use to go within and reconnect with who we really are. Not the self that we think others want us to be, but that which we were born with and has always been there. We often find we lose our way, as we get lost in the day-to-day struggles and stresses that we don’t know how to return home. Home, to that place within us that is clear about whom we are without labels, degrees, our jobs, possessions and all the material stuff that doesn’t define us.
The practice of meditation has assisted me and millions of others on that journey home, to that place of peace, love, acceptance and the true self. And like Dorothy discovered, ‘there is no place like home” and we always have the power within us.
